I have been using John Innes seed soil for my seed tray and pots but the soil does not drain very well and i have lost a lot of seeds and young plant due to this. All the trays and pots have lots of holes for good draining.

Can anyone recommend a good soil mix for sowing seeds in tray and pots.

I know it's not by the book, but I use growbag compost for just about everything.

50:50 peat : horticultural sand is by far the best. Very little nutrient content avoids the chance of scorching delicate seedlings roots, nice good drainage too.

I'm going back to this too.........had a load of rubbish compost this year!!
Sorry, but I'll save on peat when they show me a good alternative............till then

I only buy multi purpose ... so that's what all my seed gets sown in. Never had a problem yet so will carry on with this (though it was a lot lumpier this year for some reason) Still, just picked them out

Best to sieve any growing medium before sowing

if you want to go peat free, fertile fibre is good if pricey

I got some peat free compost from B&Q and its awfull, i wont buy peat free again   im Thinking im going to add it with something else to make use of it.

On a recent Gardeners World I got the impression that the Govt has banned the use of peat in compost from the end of this year (or is it 90% ?)
What's the situation?
