Awful monday!!! New coop needed!!!
« on: December 07, 2015, 09:19 »
Hi Guys,

I've had an awful start to my Monday morning... I was moving a vehicle at home and ran into my chicken coop - its completely ruined!!! Thankfully no chickens were harmed as they were already out and about. Not sure where they are going to live until a new coop arrives!!!

So, I've now got to buy a new coop.... BUT next year I'm planning on getting some turkeys for Christmas - do you think they can live in the same coop?

I've found one which seem pretty big and thought it might sort both birds... what do you think?

I don't want to seem negative here but price wise it seems to be too good an offer, I would have expected it to be a bit more than £89.  just noticed i put the wrong price oops

I'm thinking the same.... I've ordered it now, as I really needed to sort something out for my girls but I'll have to wait and see if it's any good. If not, I shall send it back.

Check that the roost bars are higher than the nest boxes.
Treat with Hillfooters Slurrymix  for redmite before assembly if poss.

Turkeys and chicken should be kept separate permantly and do not allow chickens on areas where turkeys have been.

Hi Grinling - for what reason should they be kept separate when roaming? This may be a problem as I don't want to section off any areas.

Turkeys are immune to Histomas which is widespread in this country. This can kill chickens. If Histomas is found you have to continously worm your hens as you cannot eradicate it from your soil.
A solution would be to keep turkeys indoors.

Hiya, the coop turned up the next day - amazing delivery times! Didn't even pay extra. But the coop itself is a bit small - even tho I brought the largest one out of the 3. The nest boxes are too small really but the perch area is bigger; it will do for them, they are only in there at night time.
I will try to repair the one I ran over and use that to house the turkeys, after a slight modification.... Or just buy a shed! lol

I don't use the divide in mine.

I use line the nest box with newspaper before adding straw

Put a new topic in about turkeys, there are members who raise turkeys as well as Prod who has had big probs (histomas)

Good luck

We always kept our turkeys and chickens separate, not just because of histomas, but turkeys are really greedy eaters too, and the chickens would probably have starved!

This is a little except about histomas from a website called Community Chickens, but there are lots of references around about it.

"Black Head or Histomoniasis is a disease caused by the cecal worm parasite. There is a protozoa that lives in the cecal worm that can infect both chickens and turkeys. However, chickens are more resistant to the infection and can sometimes be carriers without showing symptoms. Earth worms can also carry the parasite and infect birds if they are consumed."

Sorry Grinling, this is the opposite to what you said, but I first found out about Black Head from the DEFRA Vet who visited us in the early days of rearing our turkeys.

Hiya, it's ok... Not the easiest to clean out and the nesting boxes are too small for the girls, but it will do for now, it's keeping them dry.
For the price I paid, it's perfect!
Thanks for asking.  :o)
