Please please please leave the eggs alone from here on in. Everytime you open the incubator, there's a temperature drop which the future chicks can feel. Resist all temptation to fiddle, nature knows best. :D

my biz is failing before it got started ill have to give up my market stall as i cant afford to keep it going looks like 2008 is going to suck as much as 2007 did
-
ill have to give up my market stall as
What do you sell on the stall ? I'm sure the members here could give you some ideas of things to sell that would make a bit of cash
-
As that bloke on the apprentice said the other night...
'I don't have the word fail in my vocabulary'. (mind you, he did get fired  )
Throw it open to the forum NP. Must be someone who can advise. Even by PM if you want. Alan Sugar must have had a few near misses before he got lucky.
Rob

me mum sells hand knitted items jumpers hats etc etc
i have hand engraved glass on there that i did my self

Ahh Np they're lovely :D
-
the prob is no one seems to go in there
You'll have to explain that NP. In where :?:
in the indoormarket seem no one goes in there so far iv not made the rent in there
-
The people who I knew who ran an indoor market stall supplemented their income by selling on ebay. They set the laptop up on the stall so this made double use of their time, they could pack up orders etc when not serving customers.

-
looks like i have 4 cock birds as they seem to be growing spurs
-
NP. There'not a chance at that age your chicks are growing spurs and so, you can't possibly sex them at a few weeks of age in this manner You still have hope of some females. :D
-
wow they are growing fast i would post pics but me camera needs new batts
but they have almost got all there new feathers
to of them keep facing off to each other
they will be an amazing color
-
Hi NP ,
Have only just picked up on this thread - don't know much about chicks (though yours are gorgeous :) ) but I do know about running a business - and it can be really tough sometimes ...
So for what it's worth:
- whatever you're selling, people have to know you're there before they'll even consider buying - so if you're not getting the footfall where you are think of ways you can attract people to you. Depends on the circumstances, but that could be a sign in the right place, advertising (though that's expensive and not usually very effective), word of mouth, leaflets - don't be afraid to get out of where your stall is and show people what you're doing. Think about handing out leaflets (and get mates to do the same for you), even go out and about with some samples of the things you're trying to sell - anything to make people aware of the fact that you're there and the stuff you sell is great!
- talk to the customers you do have. Find out what they like - but more important, be brave enough to find out what they don't like, then you can change things. It's scary sometimes asking for feedback - but what's the worst that can happen? No-one's going to die, and it could be the making of your business.
- then talk to the customers you don't yet have - again, get out and about and ask people you DON'T know that fit into your target market what they think. People often make the mistake of asking friends/family for their opinions - but it's really not very helpful - you need to hear from people that don't actually care very much about you personally and will therefore be honest.
- if the feedback is that you've got a great product but you're in the wrong place, think about how you can change your location or find a different way to sell (that's where eBay can sometimes come in, but it could just as easily be the old fashioned 'Tupperware party' approach, or your own website; if you're selling (for example) to young mums, make a deal with the local toddler group - they get a cut, you get to put yourself in front of potential customers) - it may be hard at first but will be worth it in the end.
- if they say they don't like the product DON'T TAKE IT PERSONALLY (that's the hardest thing to do and the most important lesson to learn in business) - listen to what they're saying, find out exactly what it is that's wrong - it may only be a minor thing (they don't like the colour, it's not quite the right design, whatever) and if you adapt to suit the market you will always do better.
- and if it comes to the absolute crunch - namely, that not enough people want or need what you are selling to buy enough for you to make it work - be honest with yourself, don't run yourself into the ground emotionally or financially, step back and think about what you CAN sell that people DO want. I've seen too many people go broke through pride or fear; there's no shame in saying 'that ain't working, I'm doing something different'.
- in which case ... play to your strengths. Just as an example - you're here on the forum, where you already have great contacts and lots of support. You're breeding your own stock, which shows you know something about the birds you're looking after. There is a growing interest in poultry, particularly for domestic keepers, particularly since all the publicity from Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-whatsit. You understand the basics of running a business, from the experience you already have. I'm not suggesting to rush off and start a poultry business, but do you see how the different bits of the jigsaw start fitting together?
Sorry for jumping in on the thread, but I'm passionate about business and I've had businesses succeed and businesses fail, and I really hope this helps... (http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Love/hug-035.gif)

Well done :D
-
Ooh they are Stunning! :) what wonderful pictures!
I don't suppose you are near Llanelli and have any for sale? Just noticed your comment about cocks, and must say that I'm not allowed any. :( just looking for hens, as we are council tenants so restricted.

no sorry i dont have any for sale this year but maybe next as i do plan to raise birds for sale next year
-
Ahh well no harm in asking! ;) Maybe i'll be in the market to 'expand' next year. :)
Good luck with your birds, they are truly very pretty! :)
-
Found this pic on Wikipedia and wondered if this is the same breed as yours? A Light Sussex?
Says that pic is a hen, so all may not be lost with your flock. :)
I found some black and silver sussex's local to me for sale. (Berrys in Pembrey), not sure if you are local but if you know anywhere near me that sells poultry would appreciate the details. :)
-
yeah there the same as mine lol the ones you found are called silver sussex
-
I saw some silver sussex today, but they were slightly different. Very nice birds :)
-
if you know anywhere near me that sells poultry would appreciate the details. :)
Have you had a look on here?????
http://www.poultry.allotment-garden.org/poultry-suppliers/live-poultry-egg-supplier-wales.php
Geography ain't my strongest point so Soz if miles out
-
Hi Vember, thanks for the link, found it and have emailed and had a response from my nearest listed, which is 50 miles away. Not SO far, but was hoping that i may find someone nearer.
I think for my first hen's I may buy local to me, I know the feed store and have watched the coops for the last 10 months now. :) they have a good turnover so they are not old. :)
If I can find anything nearer then i'd consider it, but 100 miles round trip is a bit expensive and also with 3 children something i'd sooner avoid. Not sure the chooks would enjoy the 'background noise' in the car either! :?
