Oooops.

Was it a proper crow or a poor imitation as hens can sometimes have a try?

It was a cute teenager crow.  I've had my suspicions about this girl as she charges at and pecks the other two, she gives me a really mean peck if I try to stroke her in her nest at bed time and she has always looked different.  The breeder will exchange on Thurs - lets see who I come home with!

I don't mind as she wasn't a very nice 'hen'.  Could never part with the other two though.

You are not having much luck nerdle.  If you are only getting one I hope she will settle with the other two.

I am amazed Nerdle as the boy is SOOO obvious in my three pekins. He has been bigger, thicker legs, large redder comb etc. from a couple of weeks. I'll have a closer look at my two girlies now and see if they might be planning any surprises. Look forward to your new girl . You may need to get 2 to help her settle with the other 2

Thank you for kind comments.
I knew there was a risk in getting 8 week chicks and the breeder did his best.  I'll take him there tomorrow - he may be a girl after all - with a crow!!!

The breeder seems think that as they are still chicks there shouldn't be a settling in problem.  The two girls are very gentle and are used to having the third 'hen' around.  I may opt to have just two hens - my lush garden is already reduced to a desert so that might be better!

There is always a price for the enjoyment of having chickens.

Commiserations Nerdle as I had a similar experience (heart sinks at the first "doodle doo"!) I kept my cockerel though as the girls liked him and he became rather handsome (renamed Sylvio as he was very partial to his ladies)  :nowink:

But your comment made me laugh!  :D

Hello
Whitey - who actually turned out a bit Splashy!
Today back to breeder (in Ampfield) - yes she's a boy!  He'll try to sell him at New Forest Show.
Came home with Whitey 2 - a few weeks younger but adorable and very tame (unlike others).  Chocky bullying her so in here with me tonight.  So new girl sleeps with Lavvy tonight - everyone so confused and stressed.

I feel rather bad as they were having the most perfect day dustbathing/grooming etc and I've upset it all.

Hoping all settled in a few days. Feeling very protective of this young girl.

They will probably be alright if the new one is added to the coop after dark so you could try that tomorrow.

I was hoping to avoid this pecking lark when I got three chicks but here were are :(  Anyone found repeatedly pecking goes in a box for an hour or two.  She's only a baby and can't take it from two of them!

Coop needs more ventilation now.  Its all go.
