Sunny, if you knew the regular prices of all those items, you'd know what a serious deal I found. Sometimes it really is a matter of being at the right place at the right time. Normally, expiring meat here is reduced only 30% before its binned. Sometimes, even at 30% off we can't afford it.

Marvellous catch there Trills!

And we think we're happy with a 50p voucher at Twongos...

Hehe only just noticed this thread!

I am all about Shoulder of pork, which is general about £2.50/kg

Roast its amazing, braised in a spicy stew it makes lovely goulash type dishes.

Beef i tend to use Shin, however it seems to be going up in price (im guessing its been on telly again).  If your slow cooking i often put in a 50/50 split of Ox heart and stewing beef and no one notices so i don’t tell them ^_^.

Lamb is all about the neck, neck of lamb on the bone makes the best curry’s you will ever taste, just amazing flavours.  I have also recently discovered mutton, which for shoulder, can be as cheap as £3/Kg.  Slow braised in stock or red wine for a few hours comes out like beefy lamb!  So good!
I hate signatures but love irony

Stop it!!! Had a scan yesterday which revealed I have fatty liver, so no red meat for me at all now, or alcohol, or cheese   feeling fed up to say the least, so off to the market today to raid the fish stall - but that's even more expensive than red meat

Very depressing news Janey ....... all the essentials in life! Is this permanent or can you eventually have a little indulgence?

Waiting to go back to see the GP, but looked it up on the british Liver Trust website. It's basically a warning sign that means I'm very likely to develop diabetes if I don't lose weight plus possibly a condition that can lead to liver cirrhosis. I'll know more when I go back to the GP, but it seems to be reversible as long as I get down to a normal weight for height - ie 4 stone to shift, so figured it's best to start with a zero tolerance for a while. My liver function tests were normal, so it's not immediately dangerous, but it was the kick up the backside I needed to get on with it!
So bought 2 trout and a lb mussels for lunch - £7  !!

Probably a timely warning for which you'll be very grateful in years to come. :)

Good luck with the weight loss programme.

The liver usually regenerates Janey, so you'll probably be fine pretty soon!

The very best of luck anyway!

Glad you found out in time, Janey, and can make needed changes.

As for cheap beef cuts, I was appalled to find shops here selling beef soup bones, with not a scrap of meat on them, for as much as really tough cuts of stewing beef! Neither of which was particularly affordable. I've paid half as much for lean ground beef as the bones and stew are priced. Really makes you think about what you need and where the real value is.

Janey I can sympathise with the shock, as I had a scan that showed a similar situation for me. As you say, weight loss will reverse this so I am going to make a concerted effort ...  once i know about a couple of other health issues I won't bore you with right now..

..... so glad the liver function tests were normal

and the good news is

turkey meat is really good for you  :D
