for 2 years now I've tried growing carrots in a tunnel of enviromesh I inherited with the plot - the problem was I'm so reluctant to take the mesh off for fear of The Fly that they got completely swamped with weeds! Am going for buckets and boxes raised off the ground this year I think...

Do your weeding in the evening. Carrot fly take to the wing in bright sunlight.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You are fine for that half hour, honest. Try not to break carrot leaves and stems, they give off a strong smell.

So how big are carrot fly?  I've been given some fine mesh (below), about 1m wide.  Does it look fine enough to create a metre tall cage?

That looks fine  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks!

Regarding talk of tops for carrot cages, have I not previously read that carrot fly don't fly much over a couple of foot high?

I used to grow carrots in an old chimney pot which was about 2' high and mostly got away with it without covering them, but because chimney pots don't have room for many carrots (no matter how much you try to crowd them in!) I now grow them in the garden under enviromesh.

Trouble with the barrier method is that it must be at least 2' higher than any ground or surface surrounding it (also, carrot flies are not actually scared of heights but are very weak fliers - unfortunately that means they are easily blown around (including getting caught in updraughts..............!  )

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

'scared of heights'

lol. Very good.

I read in some agricultural ministry documentation that they live in trees. They do fly in to the carrot fields, from the thickets.

Flying low, of course makes some sense if you are after carrots.

But they can rise. Up.
