Training Plum Trees
« on: January 29, 2012, 19:09 »
Hi,
I have two new plum trees for my allotment and am not sure ho to support them.  Has anyone tried to train them in an umbrella or weeping shape so that the main burden would be helped by gravity?
Any advice would be most welcome.
Vicky

Only do fancy pruning plums and likes if you have oodles of time. They do fruit well without or better and needs doing in summer timish. Using a forked shaped brunch to support your ton of fruit is much less trouble.

But yes, you can, if you want to.

I've never heard of a 'weeping' cherry shape, which is what you're describing.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I already cracked tonight, don't.

When gravity helps the burden, oh yes.

I agree with gobs.

It is a lot of fiddling about to create weeping/festooned plums with no extra gain as they fruit so heavily anyway

Propping up laden branches with a forked stick or similar is helpful, to prevent snapped branches
