double-yolk eggs
« on: February 16, 2012, 01:21 »
hi all
i'm new here  ::)
i have 2 chickens - i think  they are rhode-island reds? not too sure though...
have never had chickens before.
anyway only one of my hens lays eggs (they are still quite young - about 7 months).
the one who is laying consistently lays double-yolkers! is this very rare??
cheers

No, it isn't. Quite often I have to buy store bought eggs and if I buy the X large, I often get double yolkers in the carton.

hmmm from the little research i have done apparently it is quite rare - particularly from one hen and every day!
keeping in mind the ones you buy in the store are from numerous hens and these hens are often pumped full of steroids for laying purposes.
my hens are only fed fresh vegetables and laying pellets/grains.
 :nowink:

oh and a friend of mine grew up on a poultry farm and she tells me they only used to get double-yolks about 1 in every 1000 eggs laid.

I used to get double yolkers from one of my birds when she started laying for the first time. When she got into full swing with the egg laying the double yokers stopped.
Hens can also lay them towards the end of their laying

Is your double yorker hen big? One of our ex-batts, Helen Cutter (don't ask!), is the size of a small rooster and has given us some beautiful double yolkers.

You do get hens that lay doubles, especially while young and coming into lay.

It is nice to get them, but note that hens are born with a limited number of eggs to lay, so laying double yokers all the time effectivly shortens the life of the hen (or at least the life in which it will lay)

Nothing you can do about it though, one of my light sussex layed doubles for a few months when it came into lay, then gradually grew out of it.
I hate signatures but love irony

YoungChickenLover- yes she is quite a big hen - and for a while there i was worried she was a rooster!

Lewjam- i hope she stops laying them now as i don't want her life-span to be shortened because of it :(

Thanks for the feedback - i really appreciate it :)

She should grow out of it. We still get massive single Yolkers from Helen Cutter. If she seems well, and is quite large, then don't worry.
Have fun with the hens!!!
