Morning Glory
« on: February 08, 2010, 18:28 »
Hi, i'm new here and to gardening, last summer my OH'd nettle patch became part lawn and part decking, and i managed to grow some tomatoes, herbs, chillies and peas.

Yesterday he came home with a pack of morning glory seeds, beautiful blue colour, however are they the kind of plants that take over?

I think Morning glory is part of the wider bindweed family but I believe it's better behaved than that!

I'll let others respond on whether it would be a Bad Idea to plant it though, as I've not done so myself

P.S. Welcome to the site :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Its beautiful, not rampant and is tender so wont survive a winter like bind weed.

You get the best display if you sow 3 seed to a pot and when all risk of frost has past plant them out without splitting.  The also look good grown through shrubs.

try to plant it where it doesn't get early morning sun..........cos as soon as it sees that...the flowers close :( That's why it is called morning glory.   They open in the evening and close at some time in the morning...looks very pretty though, and it's not nasty like bindweed. :)

They are climbers so need something to climb up.

I've had them and stuck them in this and that.  They have even flowered when they've been left in the little starting off pots,  you just dont get very good plants and you need to keep them watered. The blue of the flowers is gobsmacking, i cant think of anything else thats easy and the same colour.

You can wait and plant them straight into the ground but if you have bind weed you cant tell them apart easily as i know from experience :(

Morning Glory don't flower until quite late in the season, in my experience, so might not provide much of a show in early summer.

All I know Sunshine was that there were always loads more open when I got up in the morning, which faded as soon as the sun got on them  Don't know exactly when they opened.
This was Grandpa Ott just an ordinary morning glory  :)

I think they do open in the morning, you are right, and each flower only lasts for one day (Had some stripy ones last year: Ipomoea purpurea)

There are also others related to them that open in the evening Ipomoea alba that at white and scented.

They are such glorious colours  :D

Is Grandpa Ott that brilliant blue?
