Ick lice...
« on: July 03, 2009, 19:47 »
Just by chance I have noticed that one of my girls has lice.

Immediately to hand I have Frontline Combo (eliminates lice, ticks and fleas) for kittens.  Can I use this on my chicks?

If yes, how much would I use?  It comes in 5ml pipettes.

Thanks

Seems to be a lot of posts lately about lice!

Is this normal, or are there more cases than normal?

This is our 1st go at chickens so have no past experiances to compare to.

BTW Casey, I'd be very suprised if only 1 of your chooks have them, check the rest of them thoroughly!

Check this out.

The thing is on here you only hear about new chicks, eggs and problems (unless it's about ducks and geese as they are so amusing  :D) so it may seem as an awfull lot of lice, mites etc besides the weather has been ideal for lice to breed.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Had a leaflet from Flyte so fancy with my last order, it's all about red lice treatment, it must just be a good year for them.  :(

Hi casey
I ve heard of a few people using frontline on chicks, my local breeder swears by it, 1 drop rather than 3. Apparently you have to egg withdraw for a few days. Have a look at aunt sally's stickies, Im sure there is something in there about it.

Johnsons Anti-Mite Extra pump spray. Couple of pumps and it's job done. Make sure it's the Extra version that comes in a pump dispenser NOT the aerosol as they use different active ingredients.

I used the johnsons extra recently, it worked a treat and was much easier to use than powder.
I did it twice 7 days apart and some DE in between to make sure none of the eggs tood hold.

The only one i could find was Johnson's Insecticidal Spray extra, is this the one?

Its a pump action spray, says for small animals, kills fleas, lice & common external parasites, contains Permethrin for lasting protection.

Thanks.

Well since I can't get the Johnsons stuff here (and I really didn't want to wait for a delivery form the UK), I used the frontline 0.25ml for each chook, and 24 hours later... no lice.

Everyone much happier, and holding their tails high again.
