have just brought home my 4 new girls ,cant wait for my first egg,
it most prob a silly question but here goes what time of day do they lay day or night or can it be any time ?

Hens generally lay durning the day time and very rarely after about 3 p.m.

Chickens normally have a 25 hour laying cycle so the eggs are laid as a rule an hour later each day

As for that first egg, well it could happen any time

Violet is in the next box now about to lay.  We had the "I'm gonna lay an egg" for about the last hour.

The latest shes ever laid has been 7.15pm and they all went to bed at 7.30pm.

My other three seem to definitely lay before 3pm

Mine all seem to lay between 8am and about 4pm. From 8 I get at least 4 a day, usually 6. Never had any later than that time wise. I need more nest boxes as I think they may now be waiting to go in since the silkies started laying (they take sooooo long about it!!)

i will look forward to having a look at your new cohorts

im just in the process of finishing our coop and run, so fingers crossed, should have 4 or 5 of our very own by this time next week
