What not to feed to your poultry sticky ?
« on: April 11, 2009, 22:01 »

Would it be possible (or is there already) a site sticky for toxic and poisonous plants and foodstuffs that are not suitable to be put into chicken runs.
It seems most plants are not good for specific animals or bad in large amounts .

A simple 'don`t its not worth the risk' list without technical jargon would be just what beginners need.If they need more info they can go to the detailed lists later.

That would take a huge amount of time to research and write up Kev.  Are you offering to do it then ?

I`m hoping to sidestep any work for myself by suggesting that we draw on the knowledge of site members , an open list which could be added to and tidied by our stalwart mods when it suits them.
Most of us know that chooks will have a peck at any plants while free ranging , a quick go at the rhubarb leaves etc it seem to do no harm but you would not throw the leaves in the pen every time you had rhubarb. Avocado pear that is over ripe do i give it to the chicken ?
A list of all poisonous plants known to man is not needed.

A simple list of everyday plants & foodstuff not suitable for feeding to chicken.

Avocado

Rhubarb   leaf

Potato haulm

Tomato haulm

Enter yours here
And another

and another

Hoping this makes sense ,Kev

nnbreeder has sent me this link:

http://www.ttlntl.co.uk/2/Health/poisonplants.htm

it's for dogs but I'm sure some things can be assumed for poultry.

Its good of nnbreeder to give us the list but it seems a lot does not apply to birds, too much info for the beginner to get lost in again.

We had a topic running about this a few weeks ago and what came up was that although there are plenty of lists they aren't definitive- some people's birds had been eating things on the list with no sign of a counter reaction.

Seems strange in these times when chooks have pet status that there isn`t a' noxious to poultry' list and they are often left to sort it out for themselves.
Although they do manage to keep themselves alive i suspect that if the chocolate orpingtons were running riot in the rhubarb beds they would soon be ushered away.  :)

I'm not sure rhubarb leaves are terribly toxic to chickens - some keepers use them as a wormer, so I suppose they must give the chooks a good clean out

Isn't that a herbal remedy rhubarb leaves for worming........will check that one out.....

Mine have eaten the leaves and rhubarb to no ill effect.  They also love pealings that havn't been boiled  another no no  but mine wont eat them cooked ::)

Chickens are chickens at the end of the day they work out for themselves what they can and can't have.   They soon learn and know whether it makes them bad.........I'd just worry about any beloved plants you have as they don't stand a chance :D
