Underplanting brussel sprouts
« on: May 18, 2013, 10:00 »
Just planted out some sprouts in a raised bed and stamped the soil down.  They are going to be in there for a while and, as this year I'm actually paying some attention to spacing between plants, there's a wee bit of bare earth - any suggestions for something to sow/plant in between to keep the weeds down?  Happy if it is something that looks nice or is tasty or both?

because I have to net against pigeons and that gives problems with getting in with a hoe and with aphids because the birds cant get in I really would not want the hassle of tending for another crop as well. If I had to make a suggestion (and I am not keen) then something not too tall and harvested well before BS need extra room seems to be required -- courgettes perhaps.

Something quick like radishes (also a brassica so it is the right bed for them) or something that likes a bit of shade like lettuce, which will also shade out weeds.

Lettuce and radishes for sure. Courgettes and such like are not suitable at all, sprouts are hungry plants, and although the spaces may look big now, you won't see the soil at all if they get the feed they need. Lettuces and radishes will be picked beforehand so are perfect.
