« on: October 22, 2016, 23:19 »
How old has anyone used  things they have found at the back of their freezer. Just found 2 tubs of blackcurrants from 2013 along with 2 from 2015. Made pies with 2015 ones taste lovely. Before i throw old ones out love your thoughts. I do rotate dont know what happened.

Food does slowly go downhill in the freezer.  I would be wary of meat or fish that was that old, but I think fruit will be fine.  Have a look at the use by dates on frozen fruit and veg at the supermarket.   Its often well over a year away.

Why not defrost a few and see if they smell and taste OK.  If the texture has suffered a bit, they could always be used for jam or jelly  :)

I agree with New Shoot. If you use it for jellies or jams then it should be fine.  It's what I've done with mine in the past, and it has always been ok.  I'm still here to tell the tale, anyway.

I have just used 6lb of redcurrants from the freezer to make jelly.  I would say that some of them are probably 4 to 5 years old (and some have obviously defrosted a bit at some stage).   I only have one redcurrant bush so I just chuck the fruit in the freezer each year.  I have just bought a jelly bag and stand, which prompted me to defrost and use them - and, if I do say so myself, the jelly has turned out a treat!

Keep looking at jelly bags, maybe will get one. I have got redcurrants as well, but dont make much use of them, apart from giving them to friends.
