Baiting Mousetraps.
« on: April 08, 2009, 09:27 »
If like me you don`t like the idea of animals dying a slow death by poisoning and still use the old break-back type traps here`s a tip. Put a blob of silicone sealer on the bait pin/prong and push some maize kernels into it . The sealer stops the corn flying off when the trap snaps and mice cannot steal the bait without the trap going off.
Then make a mouse sized hole in a clear plastic container ( deep meat packing type ) and put this over the trap with a weight on top this will keep small birds out. If you place a couple of grains of maize outside  this you can easily see if you have any ' customers' about and deal with them.
With this method you need not renew the bait for months. Suitable for sheds and foodstores NOT coops.        Check the traps daily.
