Around the bottom of your toms.
« on: April 29, 2012, 11:48 »
There always seems to be wasted space around the base of my toms in the greenhouse. I'm musing over sowing some BNS and trailing them around the bottom of the plants 3 sisters style.

Thoughts?

Unless you get one ot the smaller ones they'll take over your greenhouse ::) I remember Klefti posted some pics of what happened in his greenhouse
I'm going to let a ridge cu and a gherkin scramble round my toms this year - will see how that works. It'll make a change from all the basil that usually grows there ;)

my only worry with that idea is how big are the pots that your toms are going in? - because both toms and BNS are greedy crops, so they need alot of food and water.

i always grow marigolds at the bottom of my toms, they look nice and act as a pest deterant. ;)

I grow lettuce under my tomato plants at the early part of the season before the GH gets too hot - usually works well. You could probably grow other quick growing salads as well.

no not a stupid idea at all - you could try it, but BNS are fine outdoors - so theres no need to have them in the greenhouse ;) - if you are wanting plants that scramble on the floor why not try melons or cucumbers?

If you put straw down as a mulch round the base of your tomatoes, you could sow some mushroom spawn in that. The website where I bought my mushroom kit from had pictures showing how to do exactly that.
