Whitefly And Dalek Type Compost Bin
« on: March 20, 2012, 18:44 »
I set up a Dalek type composter at home to compliment the ones at the allotment and to avoid taking all the kitchen waste up to the plots during the Winter.
Now the one at home is attracting what seems to be the entire worlds population of Whitefly both inside and out of the bin, yet the ones at the allotment do not do this. I am considering removing the bin at home because of this.
Any ideas what causes this and how do I alleviate it please?

i get flies in mine when it gets warmer too, but they dont affect the compost that i get out of it, they may even help it! i personally wouldn't worry about it!

I've got exactly the same problem with my "kitchen waste" dalek N2P!

The other two at the top end of the garden contain only the usual garden vegetable waste and there are no whiteflies in them, so it must be something in the kitchen waste which appeals to them, but I've no idea what it might be (and it's never happened before.)

So, not much help from me, but if you want to form a "self-help group" at least you won't be lonely!  ::)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

You just take the lid off and go and do something else for 5 minutes. They've usually gone by the time you get back

Funnily enough, I don't eat bananas!  :tongue2:

I don't really see them as a problem - if it wasn't whiteflies it would be fungus gnats or something else, although the dalek is very near my greenhouse..................

I was thinking along the lines that the ethylene gas produced by bananas might be attracting the flies. Other fruit/veg produce it too, do they not?

Thank you for your replies thus far.
We do eat a lot of Melons and the skins do only go into the Compost Bin at home, would that explain your theory Argyllie as it does sound very feasible.

my compost bin has the same problem and i only started using it 3 days ago. There's a lot of fruit peelings in there, including banana skins. I chucked some soil and worms in there to cover it a bit today and there weren't any flies when I went back to it a couple of hours later.
