Hi everyone,

I have a large magnolia stellata in my garden that is next to the house and needs to be moved as it is too close to the wall.  Does anyone know when the best time is for this to be done. I want to save the plant as it is beautiful in the spring.

Wait until you're sure it's dormant this fall - when all the leaves have fallen off. When you're ready to dig, water the whole area well the day before so the roots can absorb water for the coming shock. Also, have the new hole ready and watered. Next day, dig as wide an area as you can since the roots will be large and as deep as you can, slide the root ball with as much soil intact as possible onto a sheet or plastic tarp and slide into its new home. Stake the tree for this year, water again, tamp in soil well and keep an eye on it.
