I've just stuck a pond in front of my cut down area so I'm guessing any major tug of war could end in a soaking so my gardener may well dig them out too...so let me know how you get on when you have saved up enough energy for the task.

Leaving the roots exposed may help a bit as if we get a lot of rain some of the soil will be washed away. Just a thought, no expert  :)
