What a year
« on: October 29, 2018, 10:26 »
Haven’t been around for a while and had even thought about giving up my plots.

Back in January my father in law had pneumonia which he didn’t seem to be able to shake.  He was sent to a lung specialist and diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis.  He was doing grand and we even took him away at Easter.  Just after Easter he got another bout of Pneumonia and things went down hill rapidly from there.  By August he was on very high levels of oxygen 24 hours a day and not able to stand up without his oxygen levels dropping and collapsing.  He was hospitalized again in early September and we were told that when he came out he would need 24 hour a day care and that all he would get from our health system was 21 hours a week so l made plans to give up plots and cancel holiday we had booked.  We got a call from the hospital on a Friday morning back in September to say he was being discharged that day even though we had nothing organized,  they discharged him at 4 pm on the Friday evening without even meeting with us to tell us what we needed to do for him when he got home.  Within 4 hours he had gotten into respiratory distress had been rushed back to hospital and had died which was a huge shock to us all.  We had only just gotten through funerals etc. when his sister died and we were off again. So the last two to three months have been a rollercoaster of hospitals, funerals and comings and goings.

Thankfully I hadn’t formally done anything about giving up the plots or cancelling the holiday.  Myself and husband went off on the holiday last week and it was the best thing for us.

We went up to the plots yesterday expecting to find absolute devestation having not been up in nearly 3 months during which time we have had a number of storms but were pleasantly surprised.  There was no real damage done.  A lot of the crops had gone to seed but I should be able to rescue some.  I cleared all the tomatoes, Cucumbers and the strawberries that had gone wild in the polytunnel.  I managed to get some tomatoes and cucumbers that are usable.  I had to dump the old strawberry plants as vine weevils got them but I managed to get 60+ baby plants off them which I potted up for next year.  I then planted 100 onion sets and some garlic in the Polytunnel beds.  OH cut back and disposed of any of the brassicas that were gone to seed, dug up some spuds and roots that were still good.  Also picked some lovely Kale.  The peas and beans I will collect on next visit to use as seed for next year.

It is amazing how much calmer both myself and OH are today and also how sore we are.

So sorry to hear about what a dreadful time you have had Eblana.  That was a real ordeal  :(

Thank goodness you didn't cancel the holiday or give up your plots.  The holiday sounds like it was just what you need and getting going on the plots again will soothe your souls, even if your muscles don't quite agree at first.

Welcome back and I hope you and OH continue to slowly mend and get your lives back together again  :)

So sorry for your loss & in such a dreadful way, I hope you feel that as a family you are able to put in a complaint to maybe stop another family going through the same heartache that yours has gone.
So pleased you have managed to retain your plots & that your time there & your holiday has gone some way to establishing an equilibrium for you both, take it gently in all ways & be kind to yourselves.

What a stressful time, I feel for you. I believe growing things and being part of the natural world really helps tackle anxiety and stress, in fact I think there have been studies which prove this. You need some time for yourself now, to come to terms with all that has happened and plant your feet back on the ground. Very best wishes to you. Take care.

after reading your topic I know how you feel having had an illness that put me in hospital for over two weeks that thanks to the care of the staff and doctors have helped my recovery although not fit things have much improved but its going to take at least twelve months to hopefully get on my feet I'M still under the hospital and not to mention what my wife has done to help me through this I love her even more for what she had done for me

twelve weeks ago I was fit as a fiddle doing gardening opening our gardens for the NGS going out places then I was struck down with a nerve virus attacking my hands legs and feet

so what goes through your head laying in a hospital bed do i need to pack up our allotments there's still a crop of potatoes need digging  basiclly will i ever get back on feet after around a week with something dripping into me things started looking  a little better and then i was discharged from hospital having to use a walking stick to aid my walking gardening or allotments where the last thing to think about

but very slowly things have improved in so much i can drive my tractor and have managed to lift the potato crop with my wife doing all the heavy lifting its very frustrating not to be able to do things that where once taken for granted

but like you Eblana the allotment wasn't that bad and even picked some cabbage and cauliflower r'beans and beetroot and although i need to take things steady I'm looking forward to carry on with our allotments next year at i must say at a slower pace and getting away on some holidays

i really hope things are improving for both you and your  O/H  and your family my thought are with you

good luck and all the best from me
