Egg fertility and maturity
« on: January 20, 2010, 21:49 »
My Orpington girls have just started laying - they were bought as a trio with Claude in late August.
When are the eggs likely to be mature enough to try incubating?

 Er, no I don't want to incubate the hens. I want to try hatching the eggs. Didn't know if I should wait for a bit as they've just started laying and the eggs are small
(I thought I'd explained that really well without my usual rambling on............ :()

Ahhhh..

well, in an ideal world it is best to use year old (second season) hens particulary for large fowl as they take a while to grow on. However, in this case I would wait a month or so until the eggs are a little larger and your boy starts treading daily, if he is young he is probably doing that already  :D :D

Thanks Foxy. I'll be patient.
Not sure how old they are just that they were born in 2009. I bought them in August and they didn't look too much different to what they do now size wise, although the combs and wattles have matured.  :)
