Wormy chicken manure
« on: June 02, 2013, 18:46 »
Hello :)
I hope this is in the right section...
I've been 'collecting' my hens poop & straw for a couple of months to use down the plot but I've just found out the girls have worms   :(
Is it a good idea to bin the manure & start again when they've been cleared of worms, or would it be safe to use anyway?

Thank you :)

I haven't a clue - so I'll link the question in the poultry section to see if anyone in there knows.

The worms infest birds and are spread by birds pooing and the eggs entering the soil.  I wouldn't think that these worms would be any danger to vegetables.  I am unsure if they are the same worms that can infest dogs and cats though.

grinling has added this information

"The worms eggs need to recycle through slugs/snails, so prob not a problem. Composting straw will take a long time to rot down and use nitrogen to do so. I burn mine in an incinerator and use the ashin the garden or I can out it in my general waste bin."

I know that you are supposed to worm rabbits if they are on the same grass as the chickens as they can catch worms off the chickens? I keep them on separate areas of grass to avoid this happening rather than having to worm the rabbits although the chickens are regularly wormed.
