North-West Facing Garden
« on: November 13, 2015, 18:09 »
Hi everyone

I am considering buying a house in Devon which has a North West facing garden.

I would like to grow my own fruit and veg.

Can anyone give me advice on what would possibly grow there please.

Many thanks.
 :)

Welcome to the site  :D

I'll move your question over to the GYO part of the forum for people to consider.  Feel free to pop back into the Welcome board to tell us a bit more about yourself for a proper welcome  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

As you are aware a NW facing garden is not ideal for growing veg, but a lot depends on other factors, such as the length of the garden, the direction of the slope (if any) and the surrounding topography too (including tall vegetation.)

The further away from the shadow caused by the house the better of course - to get an idea of how much sun the garden gets you really need to have seen it during the day, using your imagination to work out the track of the sun at other times of year and therefore how much of it will fall on which parts of the garden. You may find Google Earth and Street View of some help in judging this.

My front garden faces NW, and roses and other flowering plants do quite well even quite near the house, although I wouldn't expect the real sun lovers like runner beans, sweet corn, squashes, or most herbs to flourish there (not that I've ever planned to grow them in my front garden of course!)

You are proposing to move to a usually favoured part of the country climate wise, which should help.  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Good advice there from JG, so take your time over winter to evaluate your plot. Shading from the house will be much less in summer as the sun is much higher so try tall-growing veg such as sugar snap peas, runner beans and even sweetcorn. Herbs like mint and parsley can tolerate a bit of shade, brassicas in part-shade are less like to "go over" and maybe leeks may do well.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Hi Goosegirl, JayG & Yorkie

Thank you for your replies.

The garden is a good size and flat, the lawn was spongy when we visited it too.
The present house owner says that the garden gets sun all year round.

Thanks  :)

What sort of soil will it be? That will influence growth potential as much as the direction.
