New cockerell attacking hens
« on: December 14, 2009, 19:53 »
Hi
I have 6 hens (22 weeks old) and today I bought a cockerell (about 2 years old) he is attacking my hens by biting their neck and trying to mate (I think) The hens scream like mad when he does this and I have to intervine. Is this normal or is he just a cockerell with a nasty streak.
Regards

Bob

I doubt that he has a mean streak, the hens are probably unsure of him and are not submitting. Give him a bit of time. If you throw in a little mixed corn, does he try and offer it to the girls??? This is a good way of them getting used to him

Why did you buy the cockerel ?  Is he for breeding with your hens ?

Thank you for your replies, I bought him because someone said it would encourage the hens to lay as they haven't started yet. I live in Hungary and it's cold here, down to minus 9 c in the day and minus 13 at night at the moment, so I guess that might be the reason for them not laying? and the shorter daylight hours

I don't think cockerels encourage hens to lay.  22 weeks is quite young to lay, depending on breed and the time of year is definitly against them laying.

It may also have the opposite effect as come spring they may decide to go broody and stop laying again for a few weeks. If you have no wish to breed (and remember you will get some boys hatching) I wouldn't bother with a cockerel unless like me you love the sound of a cockerel in the morning  :D
Staffies are softer than you think.
