First Eggs ?
« on: September 26, 2009, 09:57 »
We have had our hens about a month now and have just had the first couple of eggs, sort of  ???

One was split on the ground in the run, but this morning one was laid complete in the nest box but as the other had a very soft shell.

I assume POL hens don't start laying eggs perfectly first time, are the soft shell eggs normal and as they start laying regularly the eggs will take a normal form ?

Advice appreciated.  :)

Robin,

This perfectly normal for the first couple that are squeezed out.  The first couple of weeks that they begin to lay you will get some softies, some really small eggs, some very thick shells and then as if by magic you get perfect, fantastic tasing and looking eggs.  It's just like magic!!!!

Savour the first one, you may just need to make the toast a bit smaller to get the proportions correct!!!  :D

Make sure you are giving them oyster shell, or we use eggs shells that have been zapped in the microwave and crushed up very small in their pellets. It helps with the calcium needed to produce the shell, but as HH says it's perfectley normal when they first start.

Thanks for the advice, they're getting a mix of 'complete' poultry food and layers pellets which should contain the oyster shell.

I'll see how they go over the next week or so before starting to introduce crushed egg shells.

There will be regular trips to the coop to look for eggs  :D
