frozen drinking water
« on: November 15, 2007, 12:56 »
Hi Everyone,
We had a hard frost last night and when my husband went out this morning to sort the girls out their water had frozen in the drinkng tray. The water inside the container was still fluid so we put fresh water in and defrosted the frozen part.
Is there anything that can be done to prevent it from freezing at all? We were planning on going away next weekend for a couple of nights and was just going to fill up their food and water container so they had plenty but now I am worried that if we have a big frost again that they won't be able to drink.
(they have an automatic pop hole so no worries about being shut up or let out)

Muntjac has reccomended a fish tank heater, but that requires electricity of cause  :!:

Otherwise do you have a neighbour who can check on things for you  :?:

thats a great idea, hadn't thought of that,
thanks a lot muntjac. :D
not too keen on asking the neighbours although they would do it but the girls get really excited when they see you and want to come out and play. I would be worried that they wouldn't be able to get them back easily.

Antifreeze????????

Sorry coudn't resist it.  If you've got th eroom, then Munty's idea, or if not, try to put a covering over it so they can still see and get to it, but it keeps the worst of the frost off.

We've got a semi auto watering system, but its run from a hoepipe from the house to their header tank and the hose was frozen this morning.  So there I was pouring warm water all down the length of the hose trying to get it to melt!!!!
