Tomatoes in the cold
« on: April 30, 2012, 10:41 »
I've moved my tomatoes outside to a heated (frost protection only) greenhouse, but I suspect it is still too cold for them. They've all completely stopped growing and the leaves have gone quite dark. Nothing exotic variety wise, Gardener's Delight, Sweet Millions, Marmande.

Can they be saved or should I just start again?

I could bump up the thermostat on the heater, but moving them indoors would be hard as they are planted up in 20L pots.

They need a minimum of 10C, rather tham just frost protection.
It's rare they recover once they've gone blue/dark  :( Leave them where they are but start another lot off would be my advice.

I am just down the road in Teeside and I have a selection of tomato plants in an unheated greenhouse and mine are coming along nicely just took time to acclimatise.
I have planted Roma / Gardeners Delight / Red Cherry and Moneymaker.
You could just leave them to see what happens and re sow some more as a safety net.

I was worried about my tomatoes this weekend.  They are in the conservatory (which is open to the house (i.e. it doesn't have a door between the conservatory and house), but on Sunday morning it was down at 8°C in there (with all the rain), with it still being cold and dull ouside I popped the electric heater on in there to reach a warmer 12°C (which is about all I could manage!).  I'm hoping they haven't been damaged!

It's sunny today so the room should warm up nicely!  Doesn't take much sun to warm it up.

Good luck with your tom plants.

Hannah  :)

Thanks for the responses. I will leave the current ones where they are and sow some more. I can always give some away if everything comes good.

I split my toms - half went outside into an unheated greenhouse while half stayed on the windowsil. Those inside are much better looking than the ones in the greenhouse. I have only just sown my main toms but wanted to try some early ones and probably will not bother next year.

I've writted down the dated I planted everything this year (this is my first year of real growing and my first tomato plants from seed), I will be waiting till later next year as well! I planted all my Sungold seeds in one go though so I'm desperate for them to do well!  I've some plum and beef tomatoes that are smaller and started off a lot later - live and learn...
