Is it too late for squash and pumpkins?
« on: May 05, 2011, 11:28 »
I was given a load of pumpkin seeds from my neighbour on the plot and sowed around 20 sadly only 3 have come up, I think it was old seed from a couple of years back.
Since then I bought some butternut squash seed and found it only had 6 in the pack but they have all come up. Is it too late to sow squash or pumpkin seeds now as I would like to grow a decent amount. I planted 20 plants last year and the butternuts were not that productive even though we do like them.

No deffinately not too late (i hope)  ???

I have just lost half of mine last night to slugs so i'll have to re sow.
Try chitting them first, they're up within 3 to 4 days that way.

I haven't done mine yet, it's on the list of jobs to do but I haven't got around to it yet, but no worries  :nowink:

I just planted my squashes yesterday (keeping them in small pots in the greenhouse until frost risk has passed).

From the "Expert" series of books, it says that April/May is the best time to sow with harvest in ~September.

It is not too late - in fact only yesterday I noticed that I had got several good plants of courgette, marrow and pumpkin ready for hardening off and went looking for my butternut squash plants to harden off and then only to realise that I had grown three types of pumpkin (four including the seeds my grandadughter was given and insisted on planting) but no squashes. Quick shop this morning and squashes are going to be sown this afternoon. No worries they catch up.
Best of luck

Not too late, as others have said, but I'm surprised you need as many as 20 plants.

I get 3 or 4 Butternut Squash "fruits" per plant, and 10 plants is plenty for our Winter meals!
