Following Elcies posts on the chicken run construction I thought I would as well on what is going to be our new dedicated Duck run...
It started with a shed..
And now the posts are up and three sides of the kick boards buried into the ground to make a hurdle for my urban Fox folly

Now this will take some time to build so dont be expecting super quick results    Im getting the bits needed as and when they turn up apart from the mesh which I am saving for.
Move in date......... before the winter!

The shed has been repaired inside and out so all is coming along quite nicely :D :D
-
Are you sure it's sturdy enough Min?
-
What tree is it in the run?
-
What tree is it in the run?
We think its a plum tree but we never get to eat the fruit as the birds knock them all off way before they get ripe ::)
Oh I put the fence at the back up today as well

Got to keep those crafty foxes at bay you know

You said it was going to be slow going! That is very fast progress and is looking brilliant, well done :D

Well thanks im quite pleased so far. It will really slow down now due to funds! I had the wood here already so that was the easy bit!
-
Im thinking about raised beds along the front of it. That would be another obsticle for the foxes and I get to grow a bit in there as well of course!
I've been given a greenhouse today as well that will fit nicely on the right hand side up against the run so more protection there as well!
-
Your hens will peck anything within reach through your fencing so you might not get much produce from your raised beds.
-
Best keep the mesh small the eh!
-
OK then things have slowed down as predicted!
I have now stained all of the outside wood and added an extra wall in order to put my newly aquired greenhouse against.

Next is to build the serama pen withing the big pen and stain that.
Getting there slowly :D
-
looking good Min :D

It does look good, but i thought you said it was for ducks or have i misunderstand, again

It was going to be for the ducks but I have decided to move the hens in the new one so I can get a few more lol. The ducks can stay where they are in the old pen!

Well ive been busy putting in the raised beds and the decking which will screwed together. Lets see MR Fox dig his way through that lot! Under the raised beds are rubble and sheeting so again another barrier!

The mesh has arrived today so the build should be done at the weekend :D
The shed has been converted with 5 new nest boxes and plenty of perch space!
Im looking forward to getting them in there!
-
Its looking really nice. well done. i like the raised bed idea. Can we see inside the shed please to see how you've done it? Nosey I know

I shall take a few pics tomorrow when its all done! :D

That is looking a right proper job now Min :D Can't wait to see the finished pics.
-
It's looking wonderful. I would be proud to have that in my garden! :)
-
Well its done :D
Yesterday I fitted the weldmesh and the final timber uprights over it for a bit more security...
Then I put the roof on and brought the chooks in who were most impressed! They have been scrabbling around the new pen enjoy virgin ground and all the grubs that come with it!
Today I have treated all of the wood so it now looks like its supposed to be there
Heres a pic of the new nestboxes which the hens nave jumped straight into using which has surprised me as I thought they would lay all over the place as its all new!
Last but not least an area to keep the food dry...
So with an aching back I can sit down and relax knowing that the hens have enough room and even space for a few more to be added!

Looks like chicken heaven.
Just a thought, what is behind the shed panels to stop mr fox breaking through? Would not like all your hard work to be trashed by a persistent fox. Have seen pictures where they have chewed through wood panels.

The whole of the Shed that is exposed is now lined with mesh on the outside so nothing can chew its way through ;) There is also mesh dug down ito the ground and out as well so no burrowing under either! I learnt those lessons the hard way last year!

Great job. Sure your girls will be happy as hens in a dust bath with their new home and as you said theres room for more. What more could you ask for. :)
