What else can I grow?
« on: May 29, 2009, 04:41 »
We have a polytunnel that we have recently put up  :D  I have in it the normal, tomatoes, pepper, aubergine, chillis,

The only thing is I have one bed (1.5 x 1m) left and I am not sure what to put in it.

Any ideas???
Thanks :)

Depends on what you like. You could try cukes or melons which need warmth and protection in the UK. Or sweet potatoes. the first 2 could be trained up trellises.

I forgot about the sweet potatoes, I have another bed set aside for those, melons sound a great idea, how many plants would I get in that space???

Cheers

Only 2 melon plants would fit in as they'll put out lots of leaves and vines, and they're greedy feeders so they won't share with too many others. Do give them regular, deep waterings and some sort of manure/compost/seaweed type tea every week to keep them healthy and putting out fruit. The fruits themselves should eventually be supported with a leg from lady's tights - strong, stretchable, and allows moisture to pass through.

Thanks for the advice. Is it too late to grow it from seed now or will I be able to get hold of plants anywhere.

Thanks

The problem i found with growing only 2 melon plants was pollination, it was not easy to get male and female flowers at the same time to brush pollinate.
It was my first go at melons and only managed two fruits, tasty though.

Start your seeds now and they'll be up in no time.

True, you can't always get female plants so you'd start a few seeds and would quickly notice which are the male, which you'd pull out. The space Sheridal has would only fit 2 actual growing melon plants without serious crowding.

"Is it too late to grow it from seed now"

I think you are very late from seed, so would be better with plants if you can get them.

I plant mine 18" - 24" apart, trained upwards on canes, and laterals sideways on wires.
