Title: kill, pluck and gut course
Post by: pepsi100 on June 23, 2014, 11:06
I have just had a lesson in the kill, pluck and gut thing with hens and cockerels

I was happy with the gutting and plucking, but not the killing, I think the broom stick method is better than cutting the throat and letting them bleed out (he did this, then let the bird flutter around, spraying blood every where)

I had a cockerel as my bird, I never used his method of dispatching my bird, I used the broomstick method (quick, clean and I hope painless)

Only reason I went on this course was in preparation for my trip to Africa AND in case I had to dispatch sick hens

My wife wasn't happy about the course and she pulled out before it even started  :(

It may not be to every one, but its better than paying a vet 15 quid to dispatch a sick hen

(edit)

I think it would be hard for some, especially if they have given a bird a name  :(

Good for you. Where was the course?  Was it near London?

I would like to know how to pluck and gut.

I might be able to persuade OH to let me keep some for the tables.

Someone taught me the broomstick method. I do name the hens but don't have any problem dispatching and ailing bird.

OH has a problem with doing the deed and  he legs it to the allotment if he knows I am going dispatch one of the girls.

It was a Polish neighbor who put me through it, he gets eggs from me

But as I said I prefer the broomstick method not having a corpse run loose as he did

Have to be really honest the cockerel was as tough as old boots, maybe a stew next time  :(

Did the neighbour not break the nexk first?
Dispatch using your prefered method and then cut the neck to drain the blood over a bagged container for easy disposal.

Nope he cut the throat, then it slipped from his hand and hopped round the garden I caught it and let it bleed out, I wasnt happy about that way of killing him, the broomstick method is a lot better

But I know better now

I at least know how to gut the bird

Plucking them is messy, so I'd skin it next time (I have a video when I did that in India, quick and easy)

Very interesting, why do you have to drain the bird of blood?

I assume because the blood would make the meat darker or the blood goes off quicker, but I maybe wrong

I am sure others will tell more

But letting anything bleed out is just wrong, but just my opinion
