Fruit planting distances please
« on: August 08, 2011, 21:23 »
Hi we have a strip of ground around 22ft long that we would like to plant some soft fruit in. We currently have 1 tayberry, and 3 raspberries, we will be getting some more raspberries in the coming weeks. How far apart should we plant them all, and how many can we fit in with the tayberry sitting in the middle?

The tayberry needs six feet either side of it and raspberries should be eighteen inches apart. So according to recommended spacings, in one row, the tayberry in the middle and three raspberry canes either side.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

Raspberries are bst planted about a fifteen inches apart to start with as new canes come up year by year and this gives them plenty of space.

The tay berry though grows quite differently, and needs to be trained onto a fence or wires. The shoots each year can be about six to eight feet long. It flowers on the growth made the previous year and you cut out old growth once it finishes every year.

If you wanted the tayberry to sit in the middle you could train it up a structure.

Hope that helps a bit.

Ok, The whole strip will have a series of posts and wires, so the tay and raspberries will have plenty of support, 3 more raspberries then, any suggestions for summer fruiters, we have 3 autumn varietys already.

As others have said, Tayberry isnt like a raspberry, iots more like a blackberry, it needs a trelis of some sort to grown on really.
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended
