Main crop potatoes chitted?too late for planting?
« on: July 10, 2010, 22:51 »
Hi everyone, we have some Rooster tatties left over from chitting in a box and yet to be planted. Is there a deadline for UK when main crop tatties should be in ground and if not will the harvest be in October or December??Any advice would be great. Also if any of you are growing potatoes in barrels etc for patio, is it essential that the haulms flower before harvesting. A few of our haulms from second earlies are yet to flower and look as if they are at the point of collapsing over on themselves, at risk of breaking.Just wondered whether to empty the sacks to check if there's much of a crop or to persevere and await flowers!

I'm not sure if there are hard and fast rules on this, but I planted some maincrops a fortnight ago and they are up and looking well, so you may as well put them in.

I put mine in less than a month ago and they are growing nicely.  All you will lose if they don't do much is a bit of time, effort and space, I'd go for it.  Mine were 2nd earlies though, so yours will take a bit longer say harvest about  end of October??

the worst that will happen is that they will only be good enough to crop as earlies

Most definitely not a potato expert but what will you do with them otherwise.  Throw them away?  You've got nothing to lose if you can spare the ground and time.  Go for it.
