comfrey
« on: January 26, 2010, 18:04 »
I have heard so many good reports , on the use of comfrey. the leaves for placing under potatoes, is one I'm most interested in. I have also been Informed that if not careful that they can get out of hand, and when they do so are hard to control. so I'm asking for some advice as to where, and how many plants should I plant  on my allotment.

I've got 4, about 2' apart. They seem to be fine on the edge of a gooseberry bed.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

There's a well-behaved variety called Bocking 14 which doesn't go for world domination.

The more wild variety is a thug unless you are ruthless with it.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

if u use the leaves often and dont dig the soil around them no new plants will be made and it'll stay tame and not go crazy

The only problem is, it will seed!! Comfrey plantation anyone?
I get 4 good cuts from mine each year and chop down flowers and all.
It's not a good idea to try and dig them up. The long tap root breaks up and every little piece makes a new plant.
So make sure you're happy where you put them.

Not if you get the Bocking 14 it won't as the seeds are sterile. Thankfully :D

my plot was totally dominated by wild comfrey when I took it on as the site had not been worked for ten years. The roots go down very deep and if you leave just a tiny bit in the ground, a new plant will grow! Having said that, now that I have them under control and just growing where I want them, the leaves make a great tea that will feed everything - it's the only mid-season feed I use and everything seems to flourish. I also cut fresh leaves and put them in my potato trenches or use them as a surface mulch - it all seems good.

Get the Bocking 14 variety if you can tho, then no worries about it spreading  :)
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

So when does the Comfry start to grow? My plants from last year havn't appeared above soil level yet (second year, last year from root cuttings from TonyBloke). I'm wondering if I'll have any leaves to put under my early spuds?

The wild stuff in the hedgerows is, but the Bocking isn't. Soon though, it will be here soon.

Comfrey tea really pongs  :tongue2:, but I find it's just as effective if you tear up the leaves and spread them around plants.
