Raspberry Question
« on: April 12, 2009, 18:15 »
I have summer fruiting raspberries, variety Glen Ample,my question is ,there is a lot of growth at ground level, which appears to be sprouting from the stubs of last years fruiting canes which were cut down.In previous years i assumed the new canes came from the roots,is this correct?I have been removing this new growth, however i am now wondering if i have been removing new canes,or is it too early for new canes yet.

for summer raspberries....this years fruit will be on canes which grew last year.
New canes will be produced during the year which will bear next years fruit. So let your plant grow or you may be taking off this years fruiting material.

HI Mum,the canes are five years old,i have never had a concern before, but as stated this growth seems to be growing on the remnants of last years canes at ground level, and dont look like new canes.
