First post.

I've planted my climbing french beans at 4" apart as this seems to be what some of the books suggest, and it's the width of my wellied foot so it was easy to place the beanpoles at a consistent spacing. I have an impressive construction with over 120 8' poles all 4" apart (I can't seem to upload the photo though).

Now when I look around the local allotments I see no other beanpole constructions with their poles 4" apart. 8"seems the more usual distance, but there are some at 12".

So is my planting distance too close, and should I leave every other pole empty, do the more usual runner beans prefer to be more widely spaced, or do allotmenteers add extra poles as time allows!

4 inches does seem a little close but it just means you'll get more beans per foot.

The only problem is that you'll probably need to give them extra water with them being so close.

You must love beans, 120 plants, wow....

I go at about 9" apart in the row with the base of the cane rows 2 feet apart. Dwarf French go at 4" apart in 2' rows as well.
