Tumbling Tomatoes
« on: May 12, 2016, 11:18 »
Hi,

I have 3 tumbling tomatoes seedlings:

Tumbling Tom
Tumbling Tiger
Garden Pearl (I think).

How do people best grow them?  I was looking at this:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/3-Tier-Basket-Planter-Black/dp/B002TJJCHM/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1463047995&sr=8-8&keywords=hanging+basket+stand

It's a little bit pricy but fingers cross should last several years.  Is 12" basket large enough for one tomato plant?  Watering could be a problem but I could line the basket with plastic and/or add water retaining stuff...

How do other people grow, any innovative, pretty and cheap ideas?

Many thanks

Hannah :)

The whole thing is only 40ins tall, so don't think there is enough room between the baskets for the tom growth. The baskets are only 12ins across, so they can't be very deep either. They'd be very difficult to keep moist, at that size.
You'd be much better off planting the toms in deeper pots (supermarket freebies, maybe?) and standing them in trays for watering.
Not so pretty, granted, but much more likely to give you a decent crop  ;)

I plant mine in flower buckets and stand them on a shelf in the greenhouse. This means that they can tumble down without reaching the ground and makes them easier to water.

I grew two 100s &1000s plants in a 16 inch basket last year. I put a plant saucer inside the base, which helped a lot. I still had to water most days ,but it was very attractive and very successful. Doing the same this year.

The flower bucket method is good too ... looked quite good on a table at the plot and again, will be going for this again, but with what I think is Sweet'n'Neat.

(I say "think" as the seeds were sown by a friend who then gave me a pot of seedlings, but she couldn't remember the name of them. The leaves look similar to ones I have grown in the past.)

I've had tumbling toms in a 12" round basket and a triangular 'basket' with sides of approx. 10-12" in length.  One plant per basket.

Good crops but as others have said, you need to keep an eye on the watering.  I line my baskets with plastic (ex-compost bags) which has some holes stabbed into it for drainage.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
