Cape gooseberries are still green
« on: November 11, 2012, 16:07 »
at this time of the year, will they mature? when? my first year growing them, I got two massive plants and lost of fruits, but none has become dry and red.

any one got the same problem? could this year's rainy weather caused it?

Thanks

Rain at night, sunshine all day long!

They do come in different colours,  some are yellow/ orange some are purple.  I grew loads of them one year (nobody liked them!), but I seem to remember that they carried on ripening indoors when they were eventually picked. I just left them in a sunny spot, but I do remember they seemed to take forever to ripen (on the plant or off). I hope that you do get some ripe after all that effort.  :)

The most common edible one has pods that go creamy beige coloured rather than red, and the berry inside ripens to bright orangy yellow.

If it get too cold outside for them you can cut the stems and hang them up indoors--- the berries still continue to ripen for a while and it means at least you will get some to eat.

Hope that helps  :)

the berries live in their closed 'green house', I guess they are frost-proof. I will let them be.

the plant is so big, wondering if pruning is required?

thanks for all your responds

The plants are meant to be big, so you must be growing them well  :D

You can prune off any bits that are really in the way without any harm to the plant
