Fruit Trees

My mother wants to buy me some fruit trees for Christmas, I'm thinking a couple of apples and a pear.

They will need to be small ones and be able to start of live in large pots as we are hoping to move.

Has anybody any reccomondations of type of tree and also good priced sellers of them.

Look up dwarf rootstock types. There's a few out there that are fine in pots for their whole lives. They'll still need a minimum of 18inches of soil depth in a pot, though.

ive always liked growing pears ect as espaliers (thats the way they are pruned.) they make a nice attractive garden wall that way and dont take up too much space!

Last year about this time ALDI sold fruit trees at a really good price, I’m waiting for them to sell them again, to buy a pear tree.

Just picked up a plum tree at Netto for less than £4. They had apples, pears and cherries too for the same price.

I managed to get the last one they had, will try other Netto tonight. The annoying thing is their main depot is just up the road from and yet I still often miss their offers.

If you go to Aldi’s web site you can register for them to send you an email detailing the coming Special offers, this is what I am waiting for my pear tree. It comes out on Friday for offers starting on Sunday.

i got 4 apple trees from the pdsa Christmas catualoge 2 have fruited all four came to around £35! or you could try www.jparkers.co.uk

I don't think pears are self-fertile, so you may need two different varieties to get any significant yields (or a close neighbour with a pear tree).

Hi there, a few miles from us there is a really good nursery, that specialise in fruit, mainly apples, and old varieties. www.talatonplants.co.uk, they can deliver all over the country, you might be able to get some local varieties! Could be worth a look.

See today's Telegraph for an article on dwarf fruit trees and where to get them. Elspeth Thompson (the journo) has had 50 Coxs off a tiny tree thus far, and counting.

Strangely enough Becky, I tried to buy a family tree from them - got a really quite rude and dismissive reply. Must admit to being quite offended.

I still think that if you are going to plant something that should last for years, it's worth spending a bit more and going for quality. On the other hand, bargains are so attractive,
