RAISED BEDS AND TANALISED WOOD
« on: May 19, 2011, 20:13 »
I have just built some raised beds as I am retiring and getting into the grow your own business, being old enough to remember the real taste of fruit and vegetables. With a new greenhouse and the raised beds which I made, I felt very proud, however I have just read in Grow It magazine about problems with raised beds made with Tanalised wood. How serious is the problem, do I need to replace them, line them in some way or is only a marginal problem, would hate to poison the family!

Beans/Peas/Carrots/Parsnips/Courgettes/Onions already planted

Thanks for any help or advice in advance.

Alan

We use tanalised wood for our raised beds for longevity as do many others around the country. This warning about tanalised may hark back to the days when a more volatile chemical was used to treat the wood?

It used to be tanalised with arsenic and chrome compounds which have now been outlawed, thankfully.  :)

Mine are all tanalised, and I've had no problem at all!
