Title: Dotty's first chicks
Post by: ANHBUC on April 18, 2012, 10:12
Dotty, sister of Lotty (Partridge Wyandotte Bantam) has been sitting on 6 Light Sussex Bamtams eggs and 5 have hatched.   :D

They hatched on day 23 under Dotty so if anyone else is worried over their late hatch of Bantams try and be patient.  ???  Not that I was.

these quite literally are chicks in a basket!

lucky you.....where were the eggs from? the girls look well chuffed with their achievements. is there any small chance that the last egg might be late in hatching or has mum given up on it?

well done you on your first season of hatching :)

I bought the eggs online so it was a bit of a gamble.  Had to get some quickly as both my bantams went broody at the same time.

Dotty is still sitting on the remaining egg but there are no signs of it pipping.  Will give it until tomorrow as I don't want the chicks not feeding if she won't move off the nest.  The food and water is within reach but the chicks are under Mum and not venturing out yet.

well if the weather over there is as wet and miserable as it is here i don't blame them for not venturing out.

i might be coming over and asking dotty to lift that bum and get those chickidees to make some room for me!

will keep fingers crossed for the last egg but agree with you removing it tomorrow - would be nice if it did make a miracle appearance.

You would have to endure the wrath of Dotty.     Although she is not as feisty as Lotty, my hands have been pecked to bits when checking her chicks over.   ::)  She is such a good Mum.  I didn't have time to get them both used to being handled before they went broody so they are really defensive.  I will make sure that the chicks are more social as bantams are really fast and harder to catch than my normal sized hens.

The wet weather has moved in this afternoon and looks as if it is set to drizzle all night.  :(

i wouldn't mind a few pecks. what i want to know is  - is her bum big enough for me to get under???  :tongue2:

its still miserable here.....thankfully i was able to put down old sheets before i went to bed last night because i knew hubby wouldn't when he let the pooches out this morning...the sheet is now looking like its come up from a coal mine!

on another note...nearly lost the quail to mr fox last night. i've put their coop on top of logan's hutch, which is outside the kitchen window and cover them over with a plastic sheet every evening. foxy was happily standing on the run ripping the sheet to shreds when the puppy started kicking up a racket and doing laps on the stairs. even shehra wasn't on the ball last night!

hubby opened the window and threw the waste basket out the window aiming for its head. he got away but at least the quails are safe. as a treat he let mahi come up and sleep on the bed.

little b***h pushed me right to the edge and cuddled up to him all night!

there's a reason why those pesky pooches aren't allowed up stairs.....usually its me who pushes him to the edge and hogs the bed!

  Don't think you will fit in the hutch she is in.

I think everything is hungry at the moment.  Hens were making a racket earlier and I looked out of the window to see them hiding in the coop/run!  There was a huge heron sat on top, don't know if it was eyeing up something in the pond or facied a go at the quail.  I chased it but the hens kept on squarking and chuntering until they were satisfied it had gone.

That is probably why your hubby let mahi on the bed, pay back time.

I am hoping my one remaining egg will hatch into a chick as gorgeous as yours. Dotty gave me hope and although 5 out of the 6 ebay eggs were no use I am still on edge for this last little one especially after they got cold yesterday. But there is a crack...and so I am really on edge hoping Minnie will have a chick to mother after all her hard work.

  No Geo that is our lawn which is slowly getting demolished.  We have 2 broodies with 5 and 6 chicks so have to move their runs every couple of days.  We let them freerange in turns as the mums take chunks out of each other!   ::)  The main hen enclosure (6 hens) is pure mud now but will be converted to a vegetable patch when the walk in run is finished.  It should be well fertilised.
