help! chick with protruding bottom

One of our chicks has a dirty bottom and on closer inspection part of the bottom was protruding.
We have cleaned the poo off as best we can and now need advice as to what we can do.

Sounds as if it might be a prolapse of the vent, keep her away from the others as they may peck her. Not sure of the treatment.

No easy way of saying this but I'd kill it.

I'm afraid I agree with Bodger

You may want to try to push it back in with a very well lubricated tiny finger (if you can find one small enough) but it may well prolapse again :cry:

i had a hen like this and tried to get it all back in and also kept her away form the rest of the flock as they did peck.
no joy tho and she in chook heaven now.

Don't kill her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take her to the vet!! I took my when she had a prolapse....he gave her an anti-inflammatory injection and after a few days she was fine and has had no problems since

Please give it a try

:shock: Glad we didn't have to kill it. am pleased to report that all is now well with chick. (touch wood)
seemed to resolve itself after an hour of being left alone.....phew.

Thanks for all your replies. I've kept chickens for a year now and as I work at an infant school we thought we'd have a go at hatching some eggs. We've had 2 hatch out of 6 so these chicks are quite precious to us. The children have been very excited to see the eggs cracking and see the chicks change over the last 4 days. Now it's half term the chicks are home with me where they will be living permanently except for weekly visits to school so the children can see them develop.
