Spud planting advice
« on: April 14, 2013, 12:30 »
Have finally got on to the veggie plot to clear weeds/grass in readiness for spud planting, but the soil is very claggy.  Should I carry on clearing, in order to plant spuds this week before we go on holiday? Will be back early May, so am thinking this is going to be too late. They are 2nd earlies and chitting like mad, so I think they really should go in, but am concerned they may rot in the wet soil? Should I just bung em in and hope for the best? Thanks for any advice...

Do you have any rotted manure/compost/organic matter you could dig in as you go to help
with drainage?
If not why don,t you plant half now and the other half when you come back, that way your
in with a chance of getting a crop.
After a 3 year wait i finally have my allotment. HELP! (2/10/11)

Unless your soil is actually waterlogged I'd get them in asap. Stand on a board when planting  ;)

thanks Both for your replies ... I do have some topsoil which I could dig in to help. I'm in an area of the plot which hasn't been cultivated for a few years, which is why I think it's a bit heavy going - plus all the wet stuff hasn't helped!! I don't think you could call it waterlogged as such, so I think I'll persevere and get them in and will definitely stand on a board - thanks mumofstig ...
