Preventative measures
« on: July 04, 2011, 10:54 »
Hi,

Sorry I had popped this question on the end of one of my threads, but thought perhaps it qualifies as a thread in its own right.

Having lost 1 possibly 2 and nursed 1 through sour crop, I wanted to know if there is anything I could or should be doing to stop this happening in the first place?

It is so sad to see them looking so off colour and is stressful for both them and me!

Thanks
Emma

I have never had sour crop (says she touching wood) so not sure how you can prevent it but it is caused by a fungal infection - so would say make sure your feed is kept dry and fresh, the grass is kept short and if you feed them grass clippings make sure they are gathered up after an hour if uneaten as they quickly start to ferment.
React quickly at the first signs - check your hens crops every morning and follow the advice given here:-

Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi,  Thanks for your reply.

Having had one with sour crop a few months back, I did look to take the measures re no long grass etc, but perhaps I have just been unlucky  :(

It is making me a bit paranoid and I am now scrutinising their every move

I think they are starting to feel a bit paraniod now  :D

Thanks again
