Protecting my chucks
« on: March 15, 2011, 20:07 »
I have just lost 4 of our 6 chucks to next doors dogs  :(
I like to let them have plenty of space to roam so need to protect them and still let them have freedom. Would be grateful for any advice or ideas for doing this

how are your neighbours dogs getting to them? Are the dogs getting into your garden or are your hens getting into their garden?
Staffies are softer than you think.

Were they on your property or next door's when the dogs took them?  If your chickens went next door, then you will need to improve your fencing to keep them in.  If next door's dogs came onto your property and killed them I would be having stern words with the owners and asking them what they plan to do about controlling their animals!   >:(

I had the same problem - never saw the dog but suspect it was him as there was feathers in their garden. I just bought myself a run from garden life and its brilliant, lots of room to walk round in (me and the girls) its 4m x 4m and 2m high and fully enclosed.. their website is www.gardenlife.biz (just tried to add a pic of me in it but cant seem to work it out LOL..)

they are even cheaper on ebay - however whilst the idea is good chicken wire is not fox proof. In order for it to be fox proof it needs to be made with welded wire mesh. Would work for protecting against dogs though I would assume.

We've put electric fence round the patch the chickens have.  Our dogs only took about 2 or 3 zaps on the nose before they decided chickens weren't that interesting anyway....

You wouldn't want to fence off the whole garden, but to create a secure patch, it works really well as dogs (and presumably foxes) tend to approach wet nose first & they are so startled by the zap that it doesn't occur to them to try and jump over as they don't realise the electricity is only about a metre high.
