Lomans brown
« on: April 01, 2007, 08:46 »
Hi all, I have seen some Lomans Brown chickens advertised with a cock and also a silkie cock free to a good home. Can anyone tell me anything about these birds, size, temperament etc.  :?: The intention is to let them go free range I intend to let them live on our field and be housed at night.
:)  :) I am not too worried about the amount of eggs that they would produce
Happiest in the countryside.
Breathe deeply, and let the butterflies fly in formation!

Hi, We have Lohmann Brown Hens.
Lohmanns are a large breed and look like the hens on the 'Happy Hen' TV advert.  We have had ours from day old chicks and they have made perfect pets.  They are friendly and lots of fun.  Lohmann eggs are used for supermarkets and therefore the hens produce lots of eggs and do not live as long as other breeds.  We lost our first hen at just over 3 years and the other are showing their age.  They stopped laying about 2 3/4 years ago.

I can vouch for their temperment and funny ways as well I have had my lomans for a year and they are very friendly birds.

I agree with mutti they were created as a breed for battery hens. They lay evereyday without fail unles they are poorly. They are also bred to have good immune systems

Yes, I echo that.  We had 4 originally, bought in May three years ago.  We only have one left now and she is head honcho (got her some new companions).  They laid practically everyday with one day off in 7.  We were over run with eggs at one point.  Lovely hens with great personalities, just wished they lived longer.
