Merry Tiller starting problems.

I have just bought a Merry tiller Major
When started,it works perfectly. Problem is starting it. I am sure its just a knack. Choke setting ect.
Can anyone pass on some hints please. How do I c
heck the points too. ?
All info greatfully received.

usually its a case of full choke - pull over with electrics off - then drop to half choke and turn the electrics on and my rotovator usually starts, mine will rarely run on full choke for long.
but you are right - its usually a case of learning the knack for your engine.

Early Majors had the front mounted fuel tank and flo-jet carb, these can be a bit tricky as they need choke but often flood when starting and wet the plug. If yours is this type and does tend to dribble, turn the fuel on, set full choke, turn the fuel off, start the engine, back the choke to half, then turn the fuel on again. Later, rear tank engines are easier, just set to full choke, half to three quarters throttle and the engine should start after a couple of pulls, though after a long lay up, several pulls are needed to get the fuel pump to refill the carb before it will start. As for points setting, I would leave well alone, “if it aint broke don’t fix it” as it requires the removal of the flywheel.
