treating wooden tool handles
« on: January 19, 2012, 14:53 »
Hi all.

Couldn't find any threads on this (though I'm sure there must be) - in this slack period I was thinking of treating spade and fork handles etc with linseed oil. I seem to recall Bob Flowerdew uses vegetable oil.  Anyone have any tips or preferred methods? Back in my BTCV days we had a dustbin full of oil we immersed handles in!

I loving rub linseed oil into all wooden handle tools I have. It smells nicer than other oil based products  :D

I haven't a clue.

Theoretically a linseed oil finish is more prone to mildew than some of the alternatives for wooden things left outside. Wouldn't have thought that would be too much of an issue in a shed though.

Gwiz, surely this can't be a double entendre situation can it?

What would Finbar Saunders say?

I use boiled linseed oil rather than raw linseed on my tool handles. Someone I know rubs saddle soap into theirs (not sure why but that's their thing). Veg oil would work but it would need a while to soak in. I'd first sharpen the tools before doing the handle oiling.

What about some wood sealer like you would apply to a wood deck? I know some of them are oil based. There's also tung oil that is used to treat wood. Most of my tools are in good shape. I try to keep them out of the elements. I also have some outdoor planters that I bring in the winter too to keep them in good shape.

I imagine teak oil would work well too.  I have hard wood kitchen windows, I noticed that the bottom edges were starting to look a bit weathered.  I looked all over the internet for suitable treatments and plumped for teak oil.  Half an hour wiping it on with a clean rag and the window frames look just like brand new.  Excellent stuff.
