Broad Bean
« on: December 13, 2012, 21:28 »
My Broad Beans have been in the allotment since planting out from 3" pots on 6th Dec.
Holes have started appearing in the leaves.  I would have thought it was the wrong time of year for beatles.
Sometimes it is better to keep your mouth shut and be suspected of knowing nothing than opening it and proving it.

The most likely culprits are slugs. What are the holes like. Slugs make ragged edges as they rasp rather than bite.

The other pest is pea and bean weevil but they are not usually active until the weather warms up. They make semi circular bites on the edges of the leaves.

These are mostly neat round holes, clean around the edge, sometimes in the middle of the leaf.

One alternative is that they are not bites. It could be chocolate spot. This fungal disease likes warm and humid conditions and could have started in your greenhoue before planting out. Small dark brown spots.

I wouldn't worry I had similar symptoms last year, only on the lower leaves funnily enough, but didn't seem to affect the plants other than how they looked and I still had a good harvest of delicious beans  ;)

that could also be the result of capsid bugs earlier on...tiny wounds open up as the leaf grows...

Broad Bean = chocolate spot

Bean leaf beetle?

A quick search found the info above..... caspid bug might be the problem.

I've had similar holes in leaves with autumn plantings but the plants usually survive and grow away in spring.
