Recent show results

After camping at the weekend in the New Forest, dodging the downpours.

I managed to show a few items namely onions, chilli pepers, aubergines, indoor sweet pepper, garlic and squash.

Well, here's the pics.

The chilii plant and aubegines were awarded second whilst the sweet peepers claimed third. The rest got a day out.

First time i tried to grow from seed and i know what mistakes I've made.

Namely poor preparation of intended bed for them. ie no feed.

Should of watered more at the early stages. Took ages for them to get going and when I did start to water they grew. Strange that.  

My dressing abilities need some practise as well. ie tying the neck. Looking at Vegmandans way seems easier.

Overall though pleased with the results. Lots of larger red barons drying out now.

Going to try a different white variety next year, Kelsea.

I'm aiming for 2/3 pounds as I just want to show a good matching set.

At the show there was some larger sets but not as uniform as mine and scruffier.

I can't grow indoors so will need to think of rigging up a frame. However, these were grown outdoors.

The bigger ones can tend to be a bit less uniformed than others, but a good way ive heard to solve this is to keeping the neck of the onions growing as up straight as possible
with a good support.

I found out a good way for soil prepearing which i was told from the chairman of the vale allotment socitey

Lets say for 20 onions (which is how much im limited to) dig 5 trenches about 8 inch deep, 12 to 18inchs apart, (depends how big you want the onions) Put a load of manure in the bottom  with a good helping of bloodfishandbone and other feeds the onions need in the trenches and then fill them with multipurpose compost.

Then plant your onions on top of the multipurpose 12 to18inch apart.

This is the method im going to be experimenting with next year.
